Which behaviors should go on the chart?

Pick behaviors you would be happy to see five times a day, and write them as the thing you want rather than the thing you want to stop. "Kind words" earns points; "no yelling" only gives you something to argue about.

Ages 3–5

  • Came the first time I called
  • Gentle hands
  • Shared a toy
  • Tried a new food
  • Got dressed on their own

Ages 6–9

  • Kind words to a sibling
  • Started homework without a reminder
  • Told the truth when it was hard
  • Read for ten minutes
  • Helped without being asked

Ages 10–12

  • Handled a no without arguing
  • Managed their own morning
  • Kept a promise
  • Apologised and fixed it
  • Stood up for someone

Rewarding the behavior, not the mood

Points work best when they are awarded the moment the behavior happens and never taken back out of frustration. In Joyful Measures a behavior is worth what you decided it is worth, so your child can predict it — and that predictability is what changes their choices.

Keep one or two behaviors that lose points for the things that really matter in your house, and leave the rest positive.
